In New Zealand’s Caves, Glowworms Create Natural Light Installations

1

New Zealand offers some of the world’s most stunning scenery. However, due to photographer Shaun Jeffers, we now know that the land is as incredible underground. Jeffers went to Waitomo, which is famed for its limestone caverns, which are lovely on their own, but much more so since they are home to glowworms. Glowworms produce a radiant glow that transforms caverns into natural light sculptures. Like us, they make us want to get on the next airline to NZ.

A year of returning to Waitomo’s Ruakuri Cave to learn how to capture these lovely tiny animals has been quite an adventure! In an interview, Shaun. The glowworms are so bright that you feel like you’ve walked into Avatar Pandora; it’s unbelievable! The exposure duration for photographing glow worms is comparable to photographing the night sky. These photos were shot between 30 seconds and 6 minutes. I had to immerse myself and my tripod in the frigid water for up to 6-8 hours every day to get the images.
